Baga Beach Guide

Baga Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Goa and perfect for those who love the hustle bustle of North Goa. From thrilling water sports, lovely beach shacks to fine-dining restaurants and an exciting nightlife, Baga Beach has it all. The beach is named after the Baga River, which flows along the sides of the beach and ultimately joins the Arabian Sea.

It is located in the Bardez Taluk of North Goa, about 9 kilometers from Mapusa and 16 kilometers from the capital city of Goa – Panaji. It comes under the jurisdiction of Calangute and is bordered by the Calangute Beach from the South and Anjuna Beach from the North. Baga Beach begins where Calangute Beach ends, however, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact location.

Baga Beach was discovered by the hippies during the sixties and the seventies. It was them who spread the word about this pristine beach, which is when all the European tourists started descending on the sands of Baga Beach. With a vibrant nightlife, numerous stalls at the flea markets, watering holes, soft golden sands and delicious eateries, Baga Beach has always remained the number one spot on tourist itineraries.

How to Get There

The nearest railway station to Baga Beach is Thivim Railway Station, which is around 20 kilometers from the beach. A taxi from the railway station to the beach would roughly cost you around Rs. 300 one way. Otherwise, Goa’s Dabolim Airport is about 50 kilometers from Baga Beach and a pre-paid taxi from the airport to the beach would cost around Rs. 1000.

Climate and Weather at Baga Beach

Baga Beach is generally warm throughout the year. The temperature over here rarely rises above 33 degree Celsius during the day or rarely does it go below 20 degree Celsius during the night. However, it might get a bit chilly during the nights between the months of December and February. The monsoon season in Baga is between the months of June and August, which is when majority of the primary attractions such as water sports, beach shacks and beach huts get closed during this time, however, many nightclubs over here remain open. The main tourist season at Baga Beach starts from late October till the month of March.

What To Do at Baga Beach

Water Sports - Baga Beach is known for its thrilling water sports such as para sailing, wind surfing, wake boarding, jet skiing, kite surfing, banana boat rides and so on. Moreover, many Dolphin spotting and island trips are also offered over here at very reasonable rates as compared to other beaches in Goa. Most of the water sports are offered throughout the year, except during monsoon season.

Shopping – Shopping at one of the flea markets at Baga Beach has a completely different charm as compared to shopping at outlets. Mackies Saturday Night Bazaar is held near the Baga River and is one of the major tourist attractions over here. An array of stalls offering everything from clothes, treats, trinkets, souvenirs, handicrafts and jewelry to delicious snacks and authentic Goan seafood, are set up here under the clear night sky. Other than that, there are also many stalls for tarot reading, trendy hairstyles and palm reading. One can even head towards the many beach shacks and cafes situated along the shoreline that serve everything from espresso to pork vindaloo. Other popular flea markets such as Wednesday Flea Market at Anjuna Beach and Saturday Night Market at Arpora are also located just a few minutes walk from Baga Beach.

Nightlife – Baga Beach has a very vibrant and an exciting nightlife as compared to the other beaches in the state. It is known for its highly commercial nightlife, especially in and around Tito’s Lane and is also home to the infamous Café Mambos and Club Tito’s. Other popular clubs at Baga Beach are Cocktails and Dreams – for a wide range of delicious cocktails and shooters, Sports Café – for guys who just want to relax with a beer and a game of football and Cavala and Rock n Roll for live music and jam sessions.

However, despite all these exciting attractions, many tourists feel content by just lazing on one of the many sun lounges and enjoying the delicious food, beer and cocktails at the many beach shacks over here.

Some popular ones include Fiesta for its scrumptious food and a magical ambience, Britto’s – another popular beach shack known for its delicious seafood and location, The Lila Café – known for its freshly baked bread and finally, the spectacular East Meets West – perfect for romantic dinners.

Being a popular tourist spot, Baga Beach is home to many resorts and hotels belonging to all budget ranges. It is best to book a room at a hotel well in advance, as all the hotels get full booked very early, especially during the tourist season. Some popular hotels near Baga Beach are Ronil Beach Resort, Colonia Santa Maria, 16 Degrees North and Baia Do Sol. All the hotels over here are conveniently priced (between Rs. 5000 per night to Rs. 10,000 per night) and are located within five minutes walk from the beach. Some even have rooms with beautiful views of the Baga River. Alternatively, one can also stay at the many beach shacks, which are much more economical than hotels and resorts.
