Goa Relevance
In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Goa has been referred to as "Gomantak"
which is a Sanskrit word signifying a fertile land. But the present
name, Goa, comes from the Portuguese. Prior to their arrival Goa, or
Gove or Gowapura, was the name of the port town near the mouth of the
Mandovi River. This was also the same site on which the Portuguese later
built their capital, today's Old Goa.
